4 Tips For Preventing and Repairing Sun Damaged Skin

Summer is well under way and that means more time in the sun! While we love a beach day as much as the next person, we are also aware of the damaging effects harmful UV rays can have on our skin. We’ve put together a list of ways to help you repair existing sun damage and prevent it in the future!

Wear Sunscreen Every Day

The first step anyone should take to repair skin damage, is to prevent further damage from happening in the future. Start by incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine – yes, we said daily. While you might think sunscreen is only necessary during outdoor activities or during warmer months, the truth is that anytime our skin is exposed to UV rays there is the potential for skin damage. Always apply sunscreen before makeup.

Try Total Defense + Repair Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 34 (Tinted) by SkinMedica or Daily Sheer Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 by ZO Skin Health for an everyday sunscreen.

Cover Up!

In addition to wearing sunscreen, make sure to cover up exposed areas with clothing when possible. Try a rash guard or shirt made with UPF 50 fabric for extra protection, especially for prolonged periods of time in the sun. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes and the skin around them.

Try a Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is a non-surgical treatment performed by a trained professional using an acidic solution applied to the skin to remove damaged top layers, speed cell turnover, and boost collagen growth for a brighter, more even-toned complexion. Peels can effectively reverse sun damage as well as acne, acne scars, age spots, melasma, hyperpigmentation, rough skin, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Add in Antioxidants

Studies have shown that antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E can help protect skin cells from UV light and other environmental factors that produce damaging free radicals. Using skincare products with the appropriate combination and formulation of these antioxidants, along with proper sunscreen application, can add a second layer of protection against the damaging effects of sun exposure.

A couple of great antioxidant options that we offer are Vitamin C + E Complex by SkinMedica and ZO Skin Health’s  10% Vitamin C Self-Activating.
